PREJUDICE

- "Have you ever danced SWAN LAKE in the swan Lake?"
- "Well, there are bad days"

Some days you see everything black, and the next day you see all white. In short, everything depends on the mood with what you face it... our perception of things is so highly subjective and subject to bias that the theory of relativity becomes Titanic. We have put so many different coloured lenses, that I seriously doubt we've ever seen the reality around us as it is.

It’s a long time I don’t seriously say that I do not like anything. The tastes are as malleable as the perception you have of things. And experience taught me that again and again.

When I was 11 I was a real expert on classical music, with loads of music in great interpretations. However, I was unable to listen to modern music, which I looked at with hatred and intransigence. Popular music was so simple, so bland… used to movements of symphonies so well wooded and harmonically complex, I looked at the songs of 2, 3, 4 minutes like a silly thing that anyone could do, furthermore it made my ears bleed, I was unable to hear it even if I wanted to. I remember that of all my sister’s vinyls I was only able to hear the beginning of Innuendo, and because it was a drum roll... the rest of the album was unbearable to me and had to run to the other room to lift the needle and stop that hell. Such a bizarre and incoherent music... it hurt. I could not hear anything that takes electric guitar and drums.

Later I realized that my musical tastes distanced me from my classmates, who got along talking about Queen, Guns'n'Roses and Metallica, that was what everybody was listening to by that time, and I remember myself thinking: "How the hell can they like it? I don’t get it. What do they see on it?" In an effort to integrate and also out of curiosity, I asked a mate for a tape of Queen. It was a compilation of all the greatest hits of their career. At the first listening it seemed to me all the songs the same, and still could not find an explanation, but I insisted. Suddenly, when I had a few, it seemed as if I open my mind and ears, because overnight I found a wonderful music I loved. How could it be? Maybe my brain cells had not achieved so far to organize so much noise and find logic. But it marked a before and after, not only because it proved that I was wrong, but because I opened the door to assess the current music in perspective. The next phase was when I borrowed the Master of Puppets by Metallica, which seemed unsmokable to me although I was hearing many styles by that time. But thanks to my previous experiences I insisted until I turned on the light and consider it one of the greatest masterpieces I've heard in my life. And for that post were falling rock, hard rock, punk, folk, hardcore, grunge, pop, electronic, techno, trash, dance, house, trance, death, gothic, black metal, in short, all music in its widest range, that fascinated me in an enhanced form.

The final barrier to the full opening of my mind was Björk. Despite joyfully listening to all styles of music, could not stand his voice, and could not help but change the TV channel when she was on and wait for the next video. Until I arrived to La Coruña and had the misfortune (luck) of sharing a flat with Björk fans that put that all the time. How it had happened so many times there was a time that I started to love it, to be one of my favourites and idolize her as a genius of our time. After this story was clear to me that I would never seriously say I don’t like something. Not only in music, but in every facet of life. Until getting fond of almost anything you can think of. Because, if someone likes it, you may like it too, you just have to find a sense. And the surprise, with a fully open and unprejudiced mind, can be capital.

PREJUICIOS
